The moment the first note rings, the moment when something that has never existed before is born, the moment when we push ourselves to perfection, we are shaking, ‘barrr… parrr…’.

"barrr parrr" is an exhibition about all of our first contacts and the brave leaping. The pronounced sound of this title and the expression itself are about the moment when we take open our lips to spit out the first word, when we breathe the first breath into the instrument, when we press the first note, when we lift the brush for the first time, and when we tremble in the first precarious step to start. It intends to intensively express the excitement, tension, boldness, and braveness of jazz through shallow mimetic words such as ‘barrr’ and ‘parrr’, visually showing the practices for new attempts shared between jazz and art.

The moment of leap is accompanied by a slight vibration with a mixture of fear and excitement. Jamming at the studio or live jazz club, the ephemeral variation of each performance, and the scat of the jazz vocalist overlap with the image of the moment when they set off for a new discovery over trembling and excitement. The attempt for novelty and the novelty itself are made through this leap, weak as seen but at the same time too brave that has to be handled with such difficulty. "Jazz's attempt for newness is based on mastery of the existing classical music structure, to say, finger memory. At the same time, it becomes evident by a series of attempts and an unlikely combination of each instrument. Just as the genre of jazz has unfolded a new chapter through the variation of existing songs and the process of overlapping the methods of instruments and voices, this exhibition, which begins with the musical genre of jazz, is embodied through each artist's attempts and the works as its outcome. At the same time, the silences that are created in live jazz performances, the solemn moments like worship time, are created by everyone on the stage and below. Here, we present the works that can not be established without the viewer's gaze and senses. Likewise, there are moments that are only felt in the live performance. These dilute moments, which immerse into the senses, work as an opportunity to emphasize existence through absence. Artists solve questions that have been constantly raised by each visual art medium(painting, photography, installation, artist's body, sound, etc.) or questions about art that have been personally explored through each one’s works. These questions, like call and reaction in jazz, will overlap together.

Jazz has evolved based on the belief that only those frugal attempts can inspire innovation and novelty, and actions based on that fragile belief creates moments in which the act itself is more important than the outcome or that not predicting the outcome carries meanings. The artists presented in this exhibition also constantly compare themselves with the ghosts of the past and repeat, twist little by little every day with this belief.

All of the participating artists are those who try to broaden and break the traditional framework of their medium. Artists dealing with plane medium(painting, photography) will explore the relationship between the reproductive characteristics of plane medium and visual images, and in this process will present the results of independent research on visual images / optical illusions/ planes and stereoscopic images. Installation works that have an indispensable relationship with space include the audience in the minimum conditions for the work to be appreciated. Through this, it is reminded that the work of art is not established only through the gaze but also the audience is a part of the work and the key to completion. Works that become active through the performance create a moment when the audience looks at the other (performer) as if they were looking at things in everyday life, theater and visual art experience. The work without the body of the performer before and after the performance paradoxically emphasizes the absence of the performer's body and creates a space where the audience can reach a new area of interpretation based on the absence. The reason why the artists continue to repeat this practice is not to completely deny or break the existing tradition, but to develop their own uniqueness. They want to pendulum between the old and the new, crystallize their attempts, check and confirm, and continue to reach out for the new horizons.
